Reopening Thailand Corona Virus Update

In March, Thailand announced that borders will be open to international travelers with shorter quarantine requirements starting on April 1, 2021 On 19 March 2021, the Committee of the Centre for COVID-19 situation Administration released the plan on relaxing measures for inbound travel to Thailand in 3 phases.

 

Phase One

1. The quarantine period will be reduced from 14 days to 10 days, and travelers will be tested for COVID-19 twice during the quarantine. The tests will be conducted during the 3rd-5th day and 9th-10th day of the quarantine. The shortened quarantine period is only possible for those who do not travel from countries with a record of new virus variants. The list of the mentioned countries has not been release

2. Travelers are allowed to undertake activities outside of their rooms under certain conditions such as using the gym or the swimming pool, exercising outdoors, and ordering food and goods from outside.

3. A fit to fly certificate will no longer be required for foreign-nationals to enter Thailand; however, a RT-PCR test (negative) result issued no more than 72 hours prior to boarding remains mandatory.

4. Foreign and Thai arrivals that have a vaccine certificate more than 14 days old are eligible for a 7 day quarantine.

Phase Two

Phuket – No Quarantine

1. From 1 July, foreign travelers who have been vaccinated will be allowed to visit Phuket without quarantine.

2. Tourists will be restricted to travel activities within designated areas for the first 7 days of arrival. After 7 days, tourists will be allowed to visit other Thai tourist destinations.

3. Upon arrival at Phuket International Airport, tourists will be required to undergo a COVID-19 screening, including PCR tests, and download the country’s track and trace mobile application to ensure that they stay within designated areas.

Phase Three

1. From 1st October 2021, foreign travelers who have been vaccinated will be allowed to visit 6 destinations without quarantine: Phuket, Krabi, Phang Nga, Surat Thani (Koh Samui), Chonburi (Pattaya) and Chiang Mai

Important Note: mandatory 14-day quarantines will still apply to all arrivals coming from countries with COVID-19 variants.

Visa Exemption:  

The CCSA has also issued a new list of 56 countries and territories whose citizens do not require a visa and can live in the Kingdom for up to 30 days. The countries are: Andorra, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bahrain, Brazil, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kuwait, Latvia, Principality of Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Maldives, Mauritius, Monaco, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Oman, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, San Marino, Singapore, Slovak Republic, Republic of Slovenia, Spain, South Africa, South Korea, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, United States of America, Peru, Hong Kong, and Vietnam

Tourist Visa:

The Tourist Visa (TR) is available for everybody, regardless of country or residency. Applicants can arrive on any flight coming to Thailand and must stay in quarantine for 15 nights upon arrival, further duration of stay can be of any period for up to 60 days maximum (including 15 nights of quarantine stay). This visa type can be extended while in Thailand for another 30 days in total.

After going through two weeks of self-isolation in a preferred accommodation and tested negative, a visitor can finally leave the premises and travel freely in Thailand but still must follow basic preventive measures such as wearing a face mask and keeping social distancing in public.

Below are the current requirements to apply for a (TR) Tourist Visa. Please check with the Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate website in you home country for the application process:

  • Passport
  • Two 2”x2” (passport-sized) photos
  • Bank statement showing a balance of at least $700 USD or in any currency equal to this amount over the past six consecutive months.
  • Health insurance that covers Covid-19 valid for your entire length of stay, with coverage of a minimum of USD 100,000 in medical treatment
  • Booking confirmation of an Alternative State Quarantine hotel
  • Visa Application form obtained from a Thai embassy/consulate in the country of origin
  • Declaration form with travel details and attesting both Covid status and that you’ll follow Thailand’s health rules (obtained from a Thai embassy/consulate in the country of origin)


Once you get your visa before you board the flight to Thailand you will be required to have the following:

  • Your visa
  • Your Certificate of Entry
  • Your certificate of a Negative PCR test taken a maximum of 72 hours before departure
  • Your “Fit to Fly” health certificate, issued maximum 72 hours prior to departure
  • Proof of health insurance

​Upon arrival you will receive another PCR test and your alternative state quarantine hotel will arrange to pick you up at the airport. After there is confirmation that your airport test is negative on day four, you will be able to leave your room for up to 1 hour per day to enjoy fresh air in the designated areas of the hotel.
